Who doesn’t love a good superhero movie?
The classic good vs evil story, where in the end, good always comes out on top. Of course, the hero usually needs to go through a lot of challenges to be successful, but what a sigh of relief when they’re finally triumphant! The entire audience cheers! But that’s what they are, movies. While the superheroes with the superhuman abilities we know and love are fictional, I have a close and personal friend who is a better superhero than anyone else! (Including Captain America, sorry my friend). Jesus is our real life superhero.

Do you have times in your life, where you’re going through something incredibly difficult, and you just think, ‘I could really use a superhero rescue right now’. Well, you are not alone. We’re not going to be very happy in this life if we don’t have someone who can rescue us when we call for help, someone who can give us peace and assurance that everything will work out for good. This is why we need more than a friend, we need a saviour. Without a saviour, we have no hope.
Jesus is my close and personal friend.
He is, without a doubt, the greatest superhero I know because He saved the entire human race when He fulfilled His purpose here on earth. Jesus lived a sinless life on earth for 33 years before He was brutally beaten, nailed to a cross and was left to die. And for what? To give every single sinful human who lived and will ever live (that’s all of us) a chance to live with God in heaven when their time was up on earth.
“For we all have sinned and are in need of the glory of God.” - Romans 3:23 (TPT)
But what does it mean to sin?
To sin is to do anything that goes against God and His perfect nature. When Adam and Eve listened to satan and went against what God had told them, sin became a part of humanity. This means that no matter who you are, you have gone against what God has commanded, whether you know it or not. But because God loves us so much, He did not want us to be separated from Him. This is why His son Jesus was sent to die on the cross, to take the sin of every person throughout history, all so that you and I could be saved!
But the story of Jesus does not end there! In fact, it only gets better! There is so much more to learn about Jesus and His incredible superpower. First, I want to explain my illustration for this topic which will explain why Jesus is our real life superhero.
What we learn about Jesus from Doctor Strange.
If you are a fan of superhero movies, I’m pretty sure you would have seen the Marvel movie, Doctor Strange. Doctor Strange, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, is a complex character which I won’t go into the details of now. But I love how, from him, we can learn about one of the coolest things that Jesus did! Watch this…

So during this scene, Doctor Strange puts himself in a time loop with Dormammu. If you don’t know about Doctor Strange and his background, his journey takes him through a series of challenges. He ends up becoming the protector of earth, protector of the time stone and watches for threats that come from other dimensions. Now Dormammu came from the Dark dimension, and was planning to take over the earth. Ultimately, to then become the most powerful being and rule over the multiverse.
If you know your Bible, this sounds all too familiar, doesn’t it?
“Your hand-to-hand combat is not with human beings, but with the highest principalities and authorities operating in rebellion under the heavenly realms. For they are a powerful class of demon-gods and evil spirits that hold this dark world in bondage.” - Ephesians 6:12 TPT
Now when this type of thing happens in Doctor Strange, we can think of it just as entertainment. It’s not real, it’s just CGI. But what it says here in Ephesians is no entertainment. This is the reason why our world is crumbling and people are finding it harder to keep their head above water with all that’s going on. There is an enemy that wants people to lose sight of what is good. This enemy is wanting to draw people away from God and possess power over our world.
So this was Dormammu’s plan. But Doctor Strange knew he needed to be defeated. And the only way he could do that was go to the dark dimension, where time isn’t relevant, and using the time stone, put himself and Dormammu in a time loop. Doctor Strange’s plan was to live the same moment over and over again (and to be killed over and over again) until Dormammu agreed to surrender and leave earth alone.
Here’s the clincher.
Doctor Strange is killed close to 1000 times (some sources say), before Dormammu finally surrenders and is defeated. Whereas Jesus only had to die once to defeat death itself. Jesus gained His Saviour status when He walked into hell, took the keys of death and walked straight back out like a boss (Revelation 1:18). And He did it with such power and authority that He was resurrected from the dead just 3 days later. Doctor Strange is considered one of the most powerful superheroes, but even he has flaws. My friends, Jesus has no flaws.
Jesus is our real life superhero. He is the King I serve and the superhero saviour I rely on every day of my life. I am not perfect, but through His perfect love, I am made whole. This is why I consider a faith in God to be crucial. I pray you have this same realisation as you seek your Saviour and are saved from the darkness in this world.
