A mother and child in nature

I get it. You look in the mirror, you focus on your imperfections. If you try something and fail, you focus on your weaknesses. You get rejected, you question why you should even bother trying? If you’re human, I guarantee that some version of these questions have gone through your mind. Are you constantly wondering about your true worth in this rocky world?

I want to cut to the chase quickly in this blog post and I’ll do it by explaining why this particular topic is so important to me. I have experienced a lot of questioning when it comes to my self worth. And now, being only a couple of years away from turning 30, I am realising how much wasted time I have spent putting myself down and not embracing the amazing creation that God made me. And I’m willing to bet that there are women all over the world who have been spending their lives doing the same thing.

Let’s rewind two years ago. Back to when God brought a specific illustration to my mind that would show me the importance of getting this message out to whoever needed to hear it. And honestly, I haven’t stopped thinking about it since.

Have you seen the movie John Wick?

How would I describe it? Basically there is Keanu Reeves, a dog and tons of violence. Not exactly the type of movie you would find me referencing on a blog about finding your worth! Then again, Keanu Reeves is a huge advocate for knowing your worth, (we love you, Keanu!) But there is one particular scene from this movie that God brought to my mind one day when I was praying in solitude, asking him to show me something new. And here’s what I saw that will show us how to find our true worth in a rocky world.

Let me set the scene for you.

🎬 John goes down to his basement, dressed in black shoes, dark blue jeans and a white t-shirt, that now contain splotches of his blood from the attack he just went through. Having pulled himself up, he was now on a mission. Armed with a sledgehammer, John pulls back the dusty carpet from the middle of his basement floor. Eying it up, he taps the sledgehammer on his chosen target. Standing firm, John swings the sledgehammer back, lifts it above his head and slams it into his selected piece of concrete.

Strike after strike he cracks the concrete, the power and force building with every slam. And like a passionate tennis player, with each hit, John lets out a determined grunt. He gets louder every hit until his sledgehammer gets stuck in the concrete rubble. Wiggling the sledgehammer out, he tosses it to the side before dropping to his knees. And with his only focus in front of him, he starts to claw the concrete pieces away to expose a crate. He opens the dusty crate to reveal his treasures; the weaponry he needs to defend himself, and the gold coins he uses to pay for services as well as ensuring his safety from his enemies. 🎬

For my visual readers, feel free to see it for yourself (just without sound).

Clips Taken from John Wick (2014)

You can probably imagine my surprise when I realised I hadn’t seen this movie in months! And here it popped into my head when I was out in nature, listening to worship music. God really does work in mysterious ways! But as clear as a cloudless day of sunshine, He spoke to me.

“You need to let people know that it’s never too late. Some people may think they have a cold hard exterior, and some of them have forgotten the treasure I have placed inside them. Tell them I can help them break through the hardness that the world has put on them and help them see their treasures are still there.”

This is a message I strongly believe is needed in our world today.

Our world is a mysterious place to say the least. And I think humans are the most mysterious things to inhabit it. Clearly, we have all been raised in dissimilar environments with different influences showing us the ways of the world. Some have had a good childhood and others have been less fortunate. But no matter who we are or where we have come from, aren’t we all just looking to be loved and accepted unconditionally? Much of the time we are looking to find this perfect and unconditional love and acceptance from the people around us. However, we are looking in the wrong place. Humans are not perfect, therefore we cannot love perfectly.

Can you see where I'm going with this?

We need to look to God to find the perfect love and acceptance we are longing for! People have tried for centuries to find this love on earth, but the same problems continue to arise generation after generation ever since the beginning of time. All because we think we know what is best for us when actually, we need to look to the One who created us to find this perfect love. Only then can we find our true worth.

Psalm 139:13-16 is probably one of, if not, my favourite group of verses in the Bible. These verses remind me about my true worth, that I was created at this specific time for an amazing purpose, and that there is absolutely no one else like me. There never has been and there never will be. The gift of life is an absolute marvel, but how often do we actually think about this? How deeply have you thought about the amount of planning and detail that went into your design and creation?

You are in NO way a mistake.

The Bible is truly the secret to winning at life. It gives us every answer to every problem we would ever encounter in our lives. Here is how, through the Bible, you find your true worth in a rocky world. It tells us in Psalm 139 (TPT);

“You formed my innermost being, shaping my delicate inside and my intricate outside, and wove them all together in my mother’s womb.” verse 13.

I’m gobsmacked every time I read this. For my creator to design me from the inside out, how can I even question if He knows me best? He knew every single part of who I would be long before I was even conceived. I try to remember this on those days where I’m doubting myself, or thinking I know what’s best for me. God knows what’s best for me, which is why I choose to find my worth in Him.

“I thank you, God, for making me so mysteriously complex! Everything you do is marvelously breathtaking. It simply amazes me to think about it! How thoroughly you know me, Lord!” verse 14.

I absolutely love the words ‘mysteriously complex’, because how else can we explain how the human body is made? Bible commentator David Guzik says “The workings of the human body are stunning in their design and execution. We know far more than David [who wrote these verses] ever did about how we are made, and it should make us full of more awe and praise than David ever had.” This is true! Knowing all we know today, how can we not believe we are created by a significantly creative and powerful God?

“You even formed every bone in my body when you created me in the secret place; carefully, skillfully you shaped me from nothing to something.” verse 15.

I can’t not comment on abortion here, when we’re getting super intimate with how delicately we are formed before we’re even born! God doesn’t just see a fetus when we’re in our mother’s womb, He sees us! He sees every detail, every skill, every talent, every hair follicle, every beautiful quirky detail that makes us, us! And He is extremely pleased with what He sees.

“You saw who you created me to be before I became me! Before I’d ever seen the light of day, the number of days you planned for me were already recorded in your book.” verse 16.

This is mind blowing information that confirms how we find our true worth in a rocky world!

If I was to sum up this passage with a simple message, it’s this…

Look to the one who took the time to create every part of you so beautifully and purposefully. Only then can we live our lives knowing who we are. Your worth is found in your Creator.

Are you currently feeling trapped in a cold hard exterior? Or have you simply forgotten about the beautiful treasure that’s been placed inside you for a purpose? I pray you start believing in your worth again today. And that you look to the One who made you so mysteriously complex!
