Fierce Female: Agent Carter

Crikey o’riley! Agent Carter is a force to be reckoned with! Out of all the female characters in the Marvel Universe, I would say she is definitely in my top 3! Agent Peggy Carter was there from the beginning as the right hand woman to the first avenger, Steve Rogers, AKA Captain America. She is certainly a fierce female, a go-getter, and a woman on a mission.
Before we begin, a brief heads up…
In these ‘Fierce Female’ blogs, I will be highlighting three key things about each woman we study, and will share what we can learn from them through key scriptures in the Bible. There are so many amazing female characters in cinema and tv shows that can influence us, so we need to be sure we are taking the right message from what they are sharing and confirm it with the truth of God.
So let’s begin with the first woman in the Marvel Cinematic Universe!
My favourite quote from Agent Peggy Carter:
“I don’t need a congressional honour, I don’t need Agent Thompson’s approval or the President’s. I know my value. Anyone else’s opinion doesn’t really matter.”
This gives you a little glimpse into who Peggy Carter is, and it leads perfectly into what we can learn from her character.
Firstly, she doesn’t strive for popularity.

One of the first things I loved about Peggy is that she doesn’t do things just so she can fit in with her peers. As she said above, she doesn’t live her life based on the opinions of others. Rather, she strives to do the right thing and ultimately works to keep to her moral code. And she knows that not everyone is going to like her for it.
Agent Carter rolls with a few core people that she knows she can count on. People she can trust come few and far between in her line of work, and it certainly takes time to learn not to push people away because of it. Instead, she learns to be alert at all times with whom she comes in contact with, and can decipher who shares her morals and who also strives to do the right thing.
I love this quality because it’s important to realise that a few good people are really all we need. If we have made the choice to follow Jesus, we need to accept that not everyone is going to love us. This is something many of us need to make peace with and be aware of when we think of the people we let influence us.
The Biblical Truth.
“Don’t be fooled by those who say such things, for ‘bad company corrupts good character.’”
Peggy knows that trusting her few core people is much more effective than trying to get the approval of everyone she meets. Don’t get caught up in trying to win the approval of the majority. A lot of people can come across as likeable and knowledgeable; someone that exudes the cool factor. But behind their public face, their actions could be deceptive.
Stay alert and be aware of the company you keep.
Secondly, she is tough and resilient in times of trouble.

Here is where we truly see Peggy as a fierce female! Every single trial that comes her way, she faces with strength and perseverance. Not just physical trials, but emotional and social ones too. Being a female agent in a world of male agents, she learns to keep strong through the constant disrespectful quips thrown at her.
One male agent in particular, Daniel Sousa, is one of the few that believes in Peggy and trusts her abilities in the workplace. At one point, when he comes to Peggy’s defence after a sexist comment is made to her, she very politely replies to him,
"I'm grateful. I'm also more than capable of handling whatever these adolescents throw at me."
Here she shows her ability to move past snarky comments, and displays her resilience despite her coworkers' attempts to tear her down. She doesn’t make a fuss or drag out a defence, but brushes it off and moves on. And with that, her strength grows.
The Biblical Truth.
“The righteous keep moving forward, and those with clean hands become stronger and stronger.”
Job is one of those people in the Bible that we immediately look to when we think of facing trials. He lost everything but continued to praise God for His goodness through his grief.
When we endure trials, we are told to call on the Lord for help and continue to move forward. Nothing will come from us becoming stagnant in the midst of a trial and letting it consume us. In no way are we to let trials defeat us! But we are to see them as seasons of growth and a time to grow our faith in the Lord.
This is the tactic Peggy gives us as she continues to face every battle that comes her way. Press on. Keep moving forward. Give your trials and tribulations to God and He will bring you through.
Thirdly, she embraces her womanhood in a classy and unapologetic way.

Peggy isn’t just a female, she is a woman. Despite being an agent, who works in the field and must get physical now and then, (she’s a master martial artist after all!) her appearance in looks and personality displays a proper classy woman from the 1940s. I love how she can be both a crime fighting go-getter, and strut around in a skirt suit and heels being the woman she was created to be.
As said above, she knows her value. She knows who she was created to be, and she doesn’t apologise for it, nor does she adjust her wardrobe to fit into her male dominated workplace. She knows who she was made to be and she embraces it.
The Biblical Truth.
“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” Psalm 139:14 NIV.
My fellow sisters, we are beautiful! God knew what He was doing when He created each of us, because He created us in His image. He loves His daughters (and sons, of course) greatly because He knew us even before the world was formed! (See Ephesians 1:4 NLT.) That’s a pretty mind blowing thing to comprehend but it’s true!
I encourage you to believe this. You were born in the right time with the body and personality He designed so specially for you! Take a cue from Peggy and own your womanhood! Walk confident and walk classy.
